When I was thinking of the design, I have thought about what I have learnt of contrast and shades and mosaic in tutorial. I thought of something much deeper than just handing in a simple mosaic which may be pretty, but does not portrays anything. Therefore, I have chose to do something that I have learnt and relate it to my thoughts. That is how I came up with my theme, life. Humble and simple but mysterious. Therefore, I chose butterflies because they are really pretty but have a short lifespan. Roses because they are bright but thorny. This is something that reflects me as well.
As for my materials, I used rough and smooth paper to do the piece. The rough paper is easier to tear to desirable patterns gives it a rugged feel for the picture. As for the wings, I used smooth paper to give me a more elegant and smooth finish.
I have done my research on butterflies and I found some picture on butterflies and roses. I basically drew them with my own imagination about roses and butterflies.
In my art work. I drew a butterfly fluttering around the rose. I chose to use bright colors for my butterfly. The colour purple to give a more open and warm feeling, and colors like orange and yellow to bring out the patterns of the butterfly.
As for my rose. I have chosen red. A bright color to begin with which draws attention of the audience. And I have added duller colors like maroon, to give it a more 3D, realistic feel and this brings out the contrast of the petals.
As for the leaves, it is the same for the petals. I used 2 shades of green to give a realistic effect as well as to show the shade given when it is being shone by the sun. For the rose and the butterfly, I tear the papers instead of cutting to give it a more rugged and jagged feeling. As a result, making it seem more realistic and abstract. Also it shows that however perfect that one might be, there's bound to have flaws everywhere. Nothing is smooth sailing as there will bound to be some rough times through this beautiful life. However, for the butterfly wings, I chose to cut instead of tear to show the contrast of the beautiful wings and the dull jagged body. I just want to show the feeling of Man, however imperfect they are, they always strive to make themselves perfect by putting on beautiful things. For example, nice clothes and makeup. They dream of being perfect and different. Perhaps in their eyes, like the butterfly, their aim and how Man strives to be perfect even with their flaws.
For the background which is the sky. I use 4 colors. 2 shades of blue and white represent a clear sky. This is something that truly matches with the pictures that I drew. A clear blue sky with a lovely butterfly fluttering around a rose. This is the image that everyone dreams of. However, I chose to leave some holes in the sky. This is to depict dark clouds. I want to portray the feelings in life. No matter how perfect you think your life is. There is bound to be some emptiness in it. This is portrays by the gray areas. Sometimes in life, there is no white and black, but grey as nothing is certain in life.
